The Facts:
Many believe that the healthcare field is one of the most “retention proof” industries an individual could enter. However, despite that, healthcare provider shortages remain a critical concern across the nation, particularly with the rising shortages of physicians. Physician recruitment is a demanding task and one of the harder searches within the staffing industry. Factors that are typically considered include compatibility, salary/pay, retainment potentials, and of course, time. These factors combined with the realization of additional upcoming physician shortages creates an even more competitive market for hospitals and other healthcare institutions seeking to recruit the necessary physicians/providers to join their organizations.
- According to the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges), by 2030 the United States as a whole, will face shortages estimated between 40,800 and 104,900 physicians
- The primary care vertical alone, is estimated to experience a shortage somewhere between 8,700 and 43,1000 physicians by 2030 (Mann et al., 2017)
- Non-primary care specialties are projected to experience a shortfall of between 33,500 and 61,800 physicians by 2030 (Mann et al., 2017)
- “As of 2018, one in three practicing physicians in the U.S. is over the age of 65 and close to retirement.” (Spanu, Doctor shortage in the US is getting worse. The American healthcare system is at risk, 2018)
The Causes:
- Population growth
- Increase in the aging/geriatric population within the United States
- Not enough individuals entering medical school, graduating, and becoming licensed physicians and/or providers to meet the growing demands
The Effects:
- Higher rates of burnout for current physicians/providers
- “A 2019 study found that more than 300 doctors die by suicide each year across the nation.” (Andrew, Physician Suicide, 2022)
- Limitations and less availability to healthcare across the nation, with remote, rural locations suffering the most
